Public Health Service and Research Award Guide Line

 
I. Objective
1.1 General Objective:
To advance public health knowledge and practice in the country by:- 
  • Recognizing outstanding contributions made by Ethiopian Health Professionals and others;
  • Encouraging young Ethiopian professionals to achieve excellence in service and research.
1.2 Specific Objectives:
To acknowledge Ethiopian professionals for their contribution for the improvement of public health service in the country;
To recognize non-Ethiopian professionals who have made exceptional contribution to public health in Ethiopia;
To recognize senior researchers for their contributions in solving health problems of the country through research;
To ensure continuity of public health research through motivating young researchers; and
To recognize non-health professionals for their initiative and leadership role in public /community health activities.
 
II. Types of Award
2.1 Public Health Service Award
2.2 Senior Public Health Research Award
2.3 Young Public Health Research Award
2.4 Certificate of Recognition for a non-health professional

III. Selection criteria
3.1 Criteria for Public Health Service Award Absolute requirement:
  •  15 years of service in Ethiopia in the health sector for Ethiopians, and not less than five years for non-Ethiopians.
Additional criteria:
  •  
  • Success of the health program in which the candidate participated or lead;
  • Innovative public health strategies developed and implemented by the candidate;
  • Leadership role demonstrated in a responsible position;
  • Effort to promote community participation;
  • Contribution in health human resource development; and 
  • Publications an advantage (as per scoring scale – annex I).
3.2 Criteria for Senior Public Health Research Award:
      
Absolute requirements: 
  • Professional degree/diploma;
  • At least 10 years of service; and 
  • At least 10 published articles in a reputable journal or equivalent. The number of publications provision could be waived in case of exceptional contribution considered as a real break-through by the Award Committee. In such cases, the Award Committee will prepare a special brief highlighting why the contribution is exceptional and will submit it to the Executive Committee which will, as appropriate, solicit further expert opinion and hold a special session to decide on the award.

  • Authorship status;
  • Relevance to public health;
  • Study base;
  • Problem solving ability;
  • Condition of work; and 
  • Membership to EPHA an advantage
3.3 Criteria for Young Public Health Research Award
      
Absolute requirements: 
  • Professional degree;
  • Age less than 40 years; and
  • At least 3 published articles in a reputable journal or equivalent. The number of publications provision could be waived in case of exceptional contribution considered as a real break-through by the Award Committee will prepare a special brief highlighting why the contribution is exceptional and will submit it to the Executive Committee which will, as appropriate, solicit further expert opinion and hold a special session to decide on the award.

3.4 Criteria for the selection of a non-health professional for recognition;
  • Demonstrations of an exemplary leadership role in participatory community health activities like water supply, sanitation and environmental protection, vaccination epidemic control, etc.
IV. Selection Process
4.1 Award announcement will be made 6 months ahead of selection date;
4.2 Candidates are nominated by EPHA members;
4.3 Candidates can compete for only one type of award at a time;
4.4 Senior research award winners cannot compete for the young researcher award at any other time in the future;
4.5 Young researcher award winners can compete for a senior researcher award at a latter date;
4.6 The selection of candidates for the awards is the responsibility of the Executive Committee or a committee designated by it; and
4.7 The final approval of the candidates for the awards shall be made by the Executive Committee of EPHA.
 
V. The Award
5.1 The award shall take place at the conclusion of the Annual EPHA conference in the presence of health officials and professional colleagues;
5.2 The presentations of the award shall be presided over by the preceding Award winner;
5.3 During the award presentation ceremony a synopsis of the winners professional life and their achievements shall be presented; and
5.4 The occasion should be publicized through the mass media. Award winners should be given the privilege of inviting at least two guests.
 
VI. Revision of the Guideline
The guideline shall be amended by two-third majority of the Executive Committee.
