To protect the public against alcohol and substance abuse, there should be comprehensive national policies, guidelines and specific regulations regarding alcohol consumption and the use of psychotropic drugs and stimulants (15 January 2011, Debre zeyit)


Speaking on Saturday at alcohol and substance abuse advocacy strategy design workshop, EPHA Executive Director Ato Hailegnaw Eshete said the Association is one of the most prominent associations of professionals in Ethiopia. At present time, with a membership of 3500-4000 professionals, it is second only to the Economist Association, adding it is over 20 years old.

“During these years, working in cooperation with the concerned public institutions and other partner organizations, EPHA has been making every effort to improve the health status of the Ethiopian people,” the Executive Director said.

“Via its health journal, newsletters and various other publications, the Ethiopian Public Health Association has been bringing forth and distributing results of many scientific researcher and studies for the benefit of its members and the general public.”

“Collaborating closely with the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health in different programmes, the EPHA is doing its share to achieve the Millennium Development Goals –especially Goal 4 and 5 focused on reducing the mortality rates of mothers and babies as well as contributing to the concerted effort to prevent and control HIV/AIDS,” he noted.

According to the Executive Director, the association has been organizing different workshop addressing the main health problems that it feels should be brought to the attention of the public.

‘This way it identifies the critical issues and advocates for those that need attention regarding which certain measures should be taken,” he stressed.

“Hence, to protect the public against alcohol and substance abuse there should be comprehensive national policies, guidelines and specific regulations regarding alcohol consumption and the use of psychotropic drugs and stimulants,” he underlined.

‘The main topic to which we are devoting our attention for our discussions of today and tomorrow has to do, then with the harmful effects to society of alcoholic addiction and use of psychotropic drugs and stimulants,” said the Executive Director, adding that the primary objective of this workshop is discussing on the issues, the actual situations.“In this EPHA is certain in its belief that its partner organizations will move step for step with us in getting involved in this critical social cause,”the Executive Director declared
