Abstract
Introduction: Hypertension is one of the modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and renal diseases. Populations in low and middle countries are especially being affected through engagement to easily modifiable risk factors like unhealthy diet, tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol and physical inactivity. However, to date no trial specifically evaluated the efficacy of Telephone intervention in addition to usual medical care for the management of hypertension.
Objective: The current study was conducted to assess the effect of telephone intervention on self-care adherence among hypertensive patients attending at Debre Markos and Finote Selam hospital chronic follow up Clinic, NorthWest Ethiopia; Randomized control trial
Methods: This non-blinded quasi-experimental study design was implemented at Debre Markos and Finote Selam Hospital, from 2018-2019. Data analysis was done by the SPSS statistical software (version 25), using paired t-test for intra-group and Chi-square and t-test for between groups comparisons. Significance level was set at<0.05.
Results: The results showed that the mean scores of adherence in the intervention group increased significantly after the intervention (P < 0.05). However, the changes were not significant in the control group (P > 0.05). Also, the telephone intervention had a significant effect on increasing self-care adherence in the intervention group compared with the control group (P < 0.05).
Conclusions: According to the findings of the study, telephone intervention is effective in increasing adherence in patients with hypertension.
