Abstract


Determinants of Anemia among Pregnant Women attending antenatal care in Bale-Robe Town health facilities-Bale zone, Southeast Ethiopia, 2019: Unmatched Case Control Study.Background: Anemia in pregnancy is a major public health problem worldwide, particularly in resource-poor regions including Ethiopia. Currently in Ethiopia different strategies undertaken to decrease anemia during pregnancy. However, despite the efforts made by the government, anemia during pregnancy is still a public health problem and associated with increased rates of maternal and perinatal mortality, premature delivery and others long term adverse outcomes. The aim of this study was to identify the determinants of anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal care in health facilities of Bale-Robe Town, Bale Zone, Southeast Ethiopia, 2019.Method: Facility based unmatched case control study was conducted from March 1 to June, 2019. Data of 282 pregnant women was collected from two public health facilities of Bale-Robe town. Consecutive sampling method was used to select study participants. An interviewer administered structured questionnaire and laboratory result was used to collect data. Data was edited and entered in Epi-data version 4 and was exported to SPSS version 23 for data cleaning and analysis.Results: The statistically significant risk factors for the occurrence of anemia among pregnant women were; occupational status being housewife (AOR= 2.0, 95%CI=1.05-3.75), short birth interval (AOR=2.49, 95%CI= 1.17-5.33), prolonged menstrual period (AOR=2.18, 95%CI=1.28-3.70) and MUAC less than 23cm (AOR= 3.86,95%CI= 1.31-11.4).Conclusion: Occupational status being housewife, short birth interval, prolonged menstrual period and undernutrition were significant risk factors associated with development of anemia among pregnant women. Therefore, strengthening of counselling on spacing of birth interval and additional diet for women with prolonged menstrual period and health education for extra meal during pregnancy.Key words: - Anemia, Pregnancy, case control, Bale-Robe
