Compassion and respectful caring among health workforce in North Shoa health care facility: A mixed methods study.

Abstract


ABSTRACT

Introduction: compassionate, respectful and caring (CRC) is an essential element of healthcare components. It builds a positive environment and intimacy among health professions, patients, and family. Lack of compassion and respect to patients and their families are the common complaint in health care facilities (HCFs).

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess compassionate and respectful care practice and associated factors among health workforce in North Shoa health facility, Oromiya Region, Ethiopia, 2019.

Methods: An institutional based cross-sectional study design that contains both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods were employed in North Showa healthcare facilities (NSHFs). Systematic and purposive sampling technique was employed for quantitative and qualitative data collection respectively. Data entries were made by Epi-data version 3.2 and analyzed through SPSS version 23. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association factors. Thematic analysis was carried out for qualitative data and triangulated with quantitative data findings at interpretation level.

Results: A total of 392 (98.5%) health workforces were responded to self administered questionnaire and 72 participants participated in FGD. The prevalence of compassionate and respectful care practices were 38.8% and 46.2% respectively. Being females [AOR=2.21, 95% CI = (1.35, 3.63)], health officers [AOR=3.27, 95% CI= (1.37, 7.77)], and Positive attitude [AOR= 2.23, 95% CI = (1.34, 3.72)], were significantly associated with compassionate care. Age category of 30 to 39 [AOR=2.22, 95% CI= (1.20, 4.12)], and greeting clients respectfully [AOR=6.90, 95%, CI = (2.74, 17.37)], were significantly associated with respectful care. Those health workforces who do not detains patients without their will, provision of compassionate care and ensures safe and clean care were significantly associated with both compassionate and respectful care.

Conclusion: Compassionate and respectful care of health workforce in North Shoa health facilities need an actual demonstrate of humanity and kindness to promote high quality care practice with patients and families. Therefore, enabling safe and good care, provision of compassion and respectful care and respecting patient trust should be encouraged.
