Abstract

Background: The coexistence of stunted child and overweight mother (SCOWT) is one of the emerging problem of low and middle income countries. The solid recognition of the SCOWT phenomenon is an imperative advance to delineating more effective and integrated strategies and address problems of over- and undernutrition and dietary quality within countries, regions and households. This also gives special importance to designing programs and policies.

Objectives: We aimed to assess the prevalence of the coexistence of stunted child and overweight or obese mother. More ever, identifying predictors that can significantly bring this coexistence was the other objective of this study.

Methods: Secondary data analysis of Ethiopian Demographic health survey of 2016 was conducted to explore significant predictors that plays significant role among overweight or obese mothers to have stunted child. For children’s nutritional status, we used height for age z-scores. Using the WHO guidelines, we considered mothers with a body mass index of >25 kgm-2 as overweight/obese. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the predictors of the coexistence.

Results: Twenty three percent of overweight or obese mothers in Ethiopia had stunted child. This coexistence of maternal overweight or obesity and child stunting was found significantly associated with maternal education, residence, and child age.

Conclusion: The double burden of over- and undernutrition in a household is a burden in Ethiopia that has to be integrated in nutrition strategies. Delivering nutrition education for overweight/obese mothers with stunted children in reducing the double burden of malnutrition should be considered.
