Abstract

Background: Implanon is long acting reversible contraceptive and it is 99% effective for preventing pregnancy. Even if, it’s so effective percentage of discontinuation of Implanon is high. In Ethiopia there is limited information about determinants of Implanon discontinuation

Objective: To identify the determinants of Implanon discontinuation among women who had use Implanon in Bahir Dar town Health institutions, from March1/2019 to June1/2019.

Methods: Institutional based unmatched case-control study was conducted in Bahir Dar town, from March 1/2019 to June 1, 2019. Cases were women who had discontinued Implanon before 3 years of insertion and controls were women who had removed Implanon at the date of appointment (3 years) of insertion. A total of 559 participants were involved in the study (141 cases and 418 controls). Pretested, structured questionnaire with face to face interview was conducted.. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to identify factors that have significant association with the dependent variable. A p-value of <0.05 was considered as significant at 95% confidence interval and the strength of association was measured using odds ratio.

Result: women educational level (primary and secondary)(AOR 0.104, 95% CI; 0.02,0.48),(AOR 0.48,95%CI;0.24,0.952), respectively, women’s who  have no children(AOR 2.04, 95%CI; 1.2, 3.4), women’s who had no discussion  with their partners (AOR 2.2, 95%CI;1.39,3.57),  mass counseling (AOR,3.5, 95% CI; 1.75,7.01), had not counseling about side effects (AOR,1.7,95% CI;1.07,2.07, Experience side effect (AOR,2.2, 95% CI; 1.4,3.4), purpose of family planning use (AOR,2.5,95%CI;1.14,4.8) were found to be a determinants of Implanon discontinuation.

Conclusion: concerned bodies should take into account future intervention and great emphasis should be given to women who have no children, counseling, the presence of partner discussion and women who have the certificate and above educational level.
